In our experience, we have noticed that a number of corporations have internal discount programs that are made available to employees through a corporate intranet. One of the advantages we can offer to our clients is that PerkSpot discount programs can be accessed at any time from work or home, regardless of whether employees have access to the corporate intranet from a home computer. After we tell our prospective clients about employees having access from their homes, a common concern that we get back is, “I don’t think very many of our employees have Internet access”.
To better equip ourselves to respond to this comment, we decided to find how many employees have access to the Internet using research from Pew Research and the US Bureau of Labor Statistics. These organizations reported that 71% of all US adults use the Internet. Internet usage rates among 18 to 49 year olds are between 83% and 87%, while the rate is only 65% for those 50 to 64 year olds and 32% for those 65 years or older. However, because only 3.8% of the US workforce is over the age of 65, we would estimate that about 80% of employed individuals have Internet access.
