PerkSpot is always keeping up with the latest trends in voluntary benefits. One of our favorite sources and a leading publication for the industry is Voluntary.com. They published an article last week about the communications strategies that companies are using to let their employees know about their benefits. Only 21% of employers polled believe that they are successfully communicating their full benefits package to employees. Even the most robust benefits package doesn’t do employees any good if they don’t know it exists.
PerkSpot can help human resources administrators communicate with employees through a customized employee discount website. We’ll manage a one-stop-shop destination that employees can use to find all of their voluntary benefits information. PerkSpot will not only enhance your employee discount offering with our national retailer relationships, we can help you better communicate the voluntary benefits package that your company already offers.

In these troubling economic times, the employee discount program plays an increasingly important role as part of a company’s voluntary benefits package. Not only are these types of programs a fun and uplifting perk, but they can save an individual real money on all of their purchases.
As employees and corporations alike are taking a harder look at their spending, PerkSpot’s employee discount programs can offer discounts and savings on everyday purchases like toiletries, pet supplies, shoes, gym memberships, and more. A few examples include:

Costco - Join or Renew - Receive free products valued at more than $40.

24 Hour Fitness - $20 off 90-day memberships and 10% off orders over $50 at Mystore - Use offer codes ‘AFLTRQ8JBX’ and ‘AFP8128′, respectively.

K-mart.com - $25 off orders of $125 or more - That’s 20% off and a new PerkSpot discount. Discount automatically applies.

Believe it or not, yes! According to Employee Benefit News, “data recently released by the U.S. division of Sun Life Financial reveals that almost half (48%) of the American workforce believes it will still be working at the traditional retirement age of 67, and four of the five top reasons given were not financial in nature”. So, despite the uncertainty in our economy right now, US workers are choosing to work longer. Furthermore, as the talent war continues to escalate among US corporations, human resources administrators need to engage their ‘alumni’ - whether they worked at the company for one year or 40 years. This trend of keeping in touch with alumni is hot amongst industries where human talent is the most valuable asset, and we plan to post more articles on this large topic several times during the coming months.
Following this trend, we have noticed our own clients extending our employee discount program to their retirees as one method of ‘keeping in touch’. It’s a turn-key process for human resources administrators that can score big points with company alumni. Especially in today’s economy, who doesn’t want perks and an employee discount program?

MSNBC published an article today titled “3 Perks That Work in Lieu of Raises“. The article argues that even though many companies will not have the means to give their employees a raise in these difficult times, there are other creative and voluntary benefits that they can offer. These three perks are designed to improve employee retention by elevating morale:
1. Give time off for good behavior - Employees consistently rank a flexible schedule as one of their favorite perks.
2. Recognize a job well done - The key to rewarding good work is to do it publicly in front of other employees.
3. Provide unique, customized incentives - Offer incentives that let them know you care about what’s important to them.
No matter what type of perks and incentives you decide to give, it’s important to tailor them to what your employees value most. When employees feel appreciated, they’ll reward you back with their hard work and loyalty. PerkSpot has an employee discount program solution that human resources administrators can use to ease the burden in these trying economic times.

When it comes to financial planning many of us could use some good advice. According to an article in The Wall Street Journal many companies are beginning to offer personal finance counseling as part of their voluntary benefits package. Previously, most companies had done little more than distribute informational brochures and post tips and tools on their websites. In recent years many employers have begun providing workers with access to personalized services like one-on-one counseling and in-depth seminars provided by professional advisory firms.
This type of benefit is an excellent perk for workers who don’t have the time or expertise to fully understand their financial options. With the slow economy making life difficult for many workers, human resource administrators can assist their employees by offering a program for personal finance advice. PerkSpot has plans to enhance our employee discount programs and voluntary benefits platforms with services similar to this in the near future.

A recent article by Employee Benefit News cited two new surveys of American employees. The first survey by Opinion Research Corporation found that 39% of employees prefer to turn to friends to talk about issues at work compared to only 22% of those surveyed that go to their HR department for help. This may be explained by the finding that 26% of workers doubt HR’s commitment to keep details confidential.
Employees continued to give Human Resources low grades in another survey conducted by MetLife. Many employees said they felt either confused (25%) or frustrated (24%) while selecting their benefits, leading three-quarters of employees to make no changes – surprising, given that 44% experienced a major life event, such as a divorce, having a baby, buying a home or getting married.
For employers to be successful, both the trust and education issues must be addressed within the Human Resources department. Perhaps offering an employee discount program as part of a voluntary benefits package would help boost morale and break down some of the ‘HR to employee’ trust issues?

The Chicago Tribune is reporting that a recent survey found 59 percent of companies intend to keep down rising health care costs in 2009 by raising workers’ deductibles, copays or out-of-pocket spending limits. What can employees do about it? Not much… so it might be time to start saving money in other areas.

A recent study by Employee Benefit News found that employees, especially those in creative roles, may experience greater productivity when allowed to surf the web at work. 57% of advertising and marketing executives said that it was okay for workers to engage in personal web surfing at work. “In the creative field, surfing non-work sites may be considered part of the job because it allows professionals to keep up with trends and seek new sources of inspiration,” says Megan Slabinski, executive director of The Creative Group. However, the study suggests the maximum amount of time that a worker should spend browsing the Web should not exceed 32 minutes.
PerkSpot is always looking for discounts, perks, and ways to improve productivity and motivation in the workplace. Human Resources administrators can turn to PerkSpot to manage their voluntary benefits program, something that is proven to improve employee morale. PerkSpot can manage your current employee discount program and also enhance the discounts that your employees receive through our relationships with hundreds of national merchants.

Voluntary.com is a great source that Human Resources administrators can use to keep up with the trends in corporate voluntary benefits. They recently published an article about vision care in the United States. According to a yearlong study just 42% of Americans without vision insurance had seen an eye care professional within the year.
Stephen Ingram, executive director of the National Association of Vision Care Plans, believes the findings suggest that “employers should not only offer a vision plan, but also educate employees on how to use them effectively.” Although consumers are generally taking a greater interest in their health care, he cautions that they do not understand how regular eye exams and vision care promote overall health and well being.
PerkSpot offers a variety of employee discounts on medical products and services. Employees have access to perks at merchants like 1-800 Contacts, 39DollarGlasses.com, VisionDirect.com, DentalPlans.com, drugstore.com, and GNC. These discounts can complement the health care benefits that employees may already receive. Here is a sample of the discounts offered as part of a PerkSpot employee discount program:

10% off automatically applied at checkout.

10% off when you spend $100. Use the code ‘TENLENS’.

8% off automatically applied at checkout.
